Ontario, Canada – Oakville Stamping & Bending, Ltd. today is pleased to introduce Gardener’s Buddy 1.0, their plant mapping and recording app for iPad. Starting with a user created sketch or map which is uploaded into the iPad, the app allows the gardener to create graphical overlays indicating plant types, locations and complete annotated details. The app generates and saves 25 maps, and the gardener uses one per month to record new plantings. There are seven layers with icons denoting: trees, bushes, bulbs, perennials, annuals, herbs, and vegetables.
When first starting to use Gardener’s Buddy, the user must create a sketch or map of their garden, save it as a JPEG, and then use the File Sharing function in iTunes to upload it into the app. With the base layer in place, 25 monthly maps are generated and saved, each with seven planting layers for use on top of the base. New plantings may be added as many times per month as desired, and all records can be emailed or synced with a computer database at any time. The app is always up to date, automatically creating a new map each month and deleting the oldest record. If a map sketch is not available, uploading a blank JPEG will result in a book type garden diary.
Gardener’s Buddy launches in portrait mode to display a scrolling list of months, starting with the coming month and going back an additional 24. An icon view of the base layer accompanies each listing, along with month and year, and whether any garden data has been recorded. The app can accommodate multiple users by tapping a green Change User button on the top right. Tapping on any month brings up the base layer of the garden map, plus any of seven different colored icon layers indicating the kinds of plants added that month (trees, bushes, bulbs, perennials, annuals, herbs, and vegetables) and their location.
Feature Highlights:
* Gardener’s Buddy – the map-based iPad iDiary for the gardening enthusiast
* Upload your own garden jpeg for base map
* Toggle function to select Planting Marker type for trees, bushes, bulbs, perennials, annuals, herbs, and vegetables
* Plant a Marker by tapping on the screen map in the desired location and filling out window that pops up with name and description
* Make a complete record of every planting
* Accommodates multiple users
* Easy export of planting using email or file syncing
* Identify, document, and maintain every plant using monthly maps
The Review button on the lower right of the map view allows the user to highlight each icon sequentially, revealing its nametag. Tapping on a Planting Marker already entered activates a pop up text window and keyboard. In addition to the Name, the text window has a Description field that allows the user to enter as much detailed information regarding the plant as desired. This annotating feature can be used to record and save relevant information that was included with the plant when purchased, plus notes, etc. In this way the gardener can easily visualize their garden as a whole, by plant type, or by date of planting. Gardener’s Buddy is a convenient, portable application which enables the user to plan, plant, document, and maintain their own garden.
“Gardener’s Buddy is designed to remove all the memory frustration from gardening,” commented designer and garden enthusiast Chris McLeod. “Identifying and maintaining every plant in your garden is simplified using this well designed app for iPad.”
Device Requirements:
* iPad compatible
* iOS 3.2 or later
* 1.0 MB
Pricing and Availability:
Gardener’s Buddy 1.0 is only $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Lifestyle category. Review copies are available upon request.

Hunter Research and Technology today announces the immediate worldwide availability of Theodolite 1.0 on the iTunes App Store. This multi-function augmented reality app for the iPhone serves as a compass, GPS, map, zoom camera, and two-axis inclinometer.
Based on the concept of a centuries-old astronomical instrument, Theodolite overlays real-time information about position, altitude, bearing, and horizontal/vertical inclination on the iPhone’s live camera image, turning the iPhone into a sophisticated location-aware viewfinder. Uses are endless, from land surveying to basic navigation, and the app is great for hiking, boating, sightseeing, photography, and sports.
Theodolite lets users take camera images directly from the app, with 2X and 4X digital zoom options. Geographical data can be stamped on the saved image for later reference. Current position can be viewed on the built-in map, with standard, satellite, and hybrid modes. On an iPhone 3GS, bearing is updated live on the map with both fixed view and world rotation.

Waze, Inc., the first free provider of driver-generated maps and real-time road information, today announced the availability of its platform for community crowdsourcing of maps, worldwide. Already, drivers have organically formed their own groups and have started using waze to build local maps in over 20 countries around the globe, including Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Thailand, Kazakhstan, and Trinidad Tobago. Due to driver demand, waze can now be used to generate real-time maps anywhere in the world, quickly and accurately, by simply driving around with waze’s free mobile app installed on your phone.
Through a community-based approach, waze harnesses driver-generated data in order to build navigable road maps. The waze application runs on users’ smartphones, while automatically and anonymously sending back GPS points as they drive. This data is then used to build and continuously update the road grid itself, road changes, and more. All of this information is collected passively, but drivers can also take a more active role, by joining the map editing arm of the community online at world.waze.com.
Demand from the international community spurred waze to open its platform worldwide, after its successful launch in Israel and the US. With waze’s technology, users can now build maps from scratch – literally paving the roads they drive on the map. Patented technology enables the map building process to happen very quickly, for example, in Singapore the highway grid was mapped in just a few days by a handful of active users. Once the map is created, the mobile app automatically provides free turn-by-turn navigation, as well as real-time traffic and community-generated road reports to all wazer’s in the region.
“Even without specific country support, we were amazed to see wazers on our live map in clusters all over the world self organizing,” said Noam Bardin, CEO of waze. “We are committed to fostering this community of users and supporting them with the new infrastructure launched today. I would like to thank these motivated wazers from all over the world for helping us bring better maps, free navigation and an improved daily commute to their regions.”
Waze launched its first mobile application in Israel, where it has been downloaded by more than 200,000 commuters. It is the fastest-growing navigation application in that market with unprecedented real-time traffic information and a navigable map built entirely from scratch by the community’s users. Waze launched in the USA over the summer and is currently available nationwide.
“Traditional map making technologies are labor intensive thus expensive,” said Mark Fitzgerald of Strategy Analytics. “Real-time maps and crowdsourced data can provide both the functionality and the free-to-consumer cost structure to serve as the map for the mobile generation, just as Wikipedia serves as the Encyclopedia for the Internet generation.”
Waze is available for Android, iPhone, Symbian & Windows Mobile users and is actively seeking partnerships with commercial map owners worldwide that want to join their crowdsourced mapping initiative.

As you may have heard by now, the recent 3.0 software upgrade for Apple iPhone means GPS companies such as Navigon and TomTom can create real-time navigation apps for the smartphone. Well, it’s here. Navigon has just released a “lite” version of its North American mapping app, for free, but beware of a couple of caveats.
While Google Maps is included on the iPhone, it only provides top-down version of the roads and doesn’t give you audio turn-by-turn directions (rendering it useless if you’re behind the wheel).
Navigon today released a “lite” version of its MobileNavigator North America app, now available for download at the iTunes App Store — and it’s completely free.
But you should probably know two things:
1. It doesn’t contain “active route guidance,” therefore you can’t use this lite version as a GPS navigation solution because you can only find your position on the map (anywhere in Canada or the U.S.) and find nearby POIs (points of interest) such as restaurants, banks, hotels and gas stations. You can also enter an address, but you can only simulate the navigation process (and will see and hear the route info) found in the full version, coming “soon.”
2. It’s a hefty download at 1.29 gigabytes. Yes, you read that correctly: 1.29GB. Even if you download this massive app via your high-speed Internet connection, you must have enough room on your iPhone to install this sucker.
Still, it’s pretty exciting news for iPhone owners.
Other neat features that will be bundled in the full version:
* Includes latest map data from Navigon
* Can be used in portrait or landscape view
* Includes the “lane assist” feature on highways/freeways
* Includes night and day modes, and multiple 2D and 3D views
* Has a “Take me home” button
* Choose from English, Spanish or French
