Apple rang in 2018 with a bang. The tech giant said App Store customers made $300 million in purchases on January 1 alone, setting a new record. That was in addition to the record-breaking $890 million generated by the App Store in a week’s period from starting from the Christmas eve. The sales surpassed a Billion dollar mark in the Holiday season.
Apple on its website said –
App Store customers around the world made apps and games a bigger part of their holiday season in 2017 than ever before, culminating in $300 million in purchases made on New Year’s Day 2018. During the week starting on Christmas Eve, a record number of customers made purchases or downloaded apps from the App Store, spending over $890 million in that seven-day period.
Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Phillip Schiller said “We are thrilled with the reaction to the new App Store and to see so many customers discovering and enjoying new apps and games. We want to thank all of the creative app developers who have made these great apps and helped to change people’s lives. In 2017 alone, iOS developers earned $26.5 billion — more than a 30 percent increase over 2016.”
Since launching the App Store in June 2008, developers have earned over $86 billion in revenue from sales. But it’s not all good news for app builders. Bloomberg’s Shira Ovide points out, the growth rate is actually down from 2016. In 2016, developers earned 40% more than they had a year earlier.
It’s getting harder to guesstimate Apple’s App Store revenue. But growth rate of developers’ revenue declined from 40%+ in 2016 to 30%+ in 2017.
